Durga and the buffalo
Rambha is the king of the Asuras, who has a son called Mahisha, who can becomes into a buffalo any time he wants because her mother is a buffalo.
Mahisha always meditated and prayed to God Brahma, so he gave him the power to be invincible by any man or God.
With this power Mahisha started terrorizing Heaven and Earth. He defeated the king of the gods Indra, and took all the devas (gods) out of Heaven. After this, the gods gathered to find out how to beat this Asura.
They thought he could not be defeated by men or gods, therefore, together, decided to create a young woman named Durga, who has the beauty of all the devas .
She attacked the empire of Mahisha and defeated his army for nine days. The tenth day of the waning lna, Durga killed Mahisha and became called Mahisha - asura- mardini, the killer of the Mahisha Asura.
